Introducing Portal: Multifactor's API Gateway Solution
2025-05-28
Today, we're excited to announce the release of Portal, Multifactor's brand new serverless, globally-distributed API gateway, available now in early access.
What is Portal?
Portal is Multifactor's globally-distributed multi-cloud API gateway solution. In addition to protecting your infrastructure and offering seamless integration with other Multifactor products like Access, Switchbox, and Carbon, Portal also forms the basis of the Multifactor ecosystem as the universal entry point to all of Multifactor's backend APIs.

Portal is:
- Serverless: No infrastructure to manage
- Globally distributed: Low latency access from anywhere in the world
- Infinitely scalable: Handle any amount of traffic without configuration
- Cost-effective: A fraction of the cost of traditional API gateways
Key Features
Flexible Endpoint Support
Portal offers flexible routing capabilities by supporting a diverse range of endpoint types. You can connect with web-based services using standard HTTP/HTTPS protocols through our HTTP(S) support. For modern cloud architectures, we've built in integrations with popular serverless platforms including Cloudflare Workers, AWS Lambda, Azure Functions, and GCP Cloud Run. Portal also seamlessly routes incoming requests to other Multifactor services and APIs, creating a unified entry point for your entire infrastructure.
Protocol Support
We designed Portal to natively support multiple protocols, ensuring compatibility with a wide variety of applications. Beyond standard HTTPS, Portal works seamlessly with WebSockets for real-time applications, gRPC for high-performance microservices communication, GraphQL for flexible data querying, traditional REST for resource management, and SOAP for legacy enterprise integrations. This comprehensive protocol support ensures that whatever your technology stack, Portal can serve as your gateway solution.
Advanced Request Routing and Policies
Portal's request routing capabilities give you precise control over your API traffic. You can define granular routing rules based on specific URL paths, HTTP methods, and user roles, allowing you to direct different types of requests to the appropriate backend services. Conditional policies can be implemented that trigger based on the characteristics of incoming requests, including paths, methods, and user roles. This enables dynamic application of traffic management rules, and request transformations tailored to your specific needs.
Intelligent Load Balancing
Our intelligent load balancing distributes incoming traffic across multiple backend instances, ensuring high availability and optimal performance under any conditions. Portal maintains user session affinity with specific backend instances through sticky sessions, improving user experience for stateful applications. You can implement weighted balancing to distribute traffic based on the capacity or health of backend instances, optimizing resource utilization. Continuous uptime monitoring automatically detects and isolates unhealthy servers, while automatic failover seamlessly redirects traffic to healthy instances during failures, minimizing service disruption. Advanced health monitoring and alerts help you quickly identify and resolve issues before they impact your users.
Performance Optimization
Portal improves response times by storing frequently accessed data closer to your users through our integrated caching system. For performance-critical paths, you can utilize our premium caching powered by Cloudflare R2, offering higher performance and reliability. This tiered approach to caching ensures optimal performance where you need it most while keeping costs manageable across your entire API surface.
Traffic Management
Take control of your API traffic with Portal's comprehensive traffic management features. Our rate limiting capabilities let you control request volume to protect backend services from abuse and ensure fair usage across your user base. Detailed usage tracking provides visibility into utilization patterns across different paths and customers, helping you make informed decisions about resource allocation and capacity planning. These tools work together to maintain consistent performance even during traffic spikes.
Request Manipulation and Validation
Portal helps you maintain data integrity by validating the structure and content of incoming JSON requests against predefined schemas through our JSON Schema Validation feature. You can transform request bodies, modify parameters, and add or override headers to ensure compatibility with your backend services. This flexibility makes Portal an ideal middleware layer that can smooth out differences between client expectations and backend requirements, reducing the need for changes to existing systems when integrating new services.
Competitive Pricing
Portal offers a budget-friendly pricing structure with a generous free tier:
- Requests: First 5 million requests per month free, then just $0.85 per million requests
- Domains: Unlimited free .multifactor.net domains, custom domains for $1.00/month each
- Caching: Basic caching (60-second retention) included free, premium caching at $1.15 per million requests
