Intellectual Property

At Multifactor, Inc., our intellectual property (IP) is a cornerstone of our public benefit mission to reinvent zero trust for the modern web. It represents our innovation, our brand, and the trust our users place in us. This policy provides a general overview of how we treat different types of IP and sets expectations for all employees and contractors.

These guidelines are intended for Multifactor customers, developers, authorized partners, and other parties wishing to utilize Multifactor intellectual property. These guidelines are not intended for Multifactor employees, officers, directors, and independent contractors, and do not supercede any specific agreements or contracts that may exist between Multifactor, Inc. and other parties.

Patents

Patents protect our unique inventions, which are central to our mission, for a limited period. We enforce our patents in concert with our public benefit mission to prevent unauthorized duplication and to ensure that our technology is not misused, without stifling innovation for academic researchers, non-profit organizations, and other legitimate users. Our approach to patenting and patent enforcement is outlined in our Patent Policy.

Trademarks

Trademarks protect the words, names, symbols, and logos that uniquely identify Multifactor and our products, distinguishing us from others and preventing confusion. Our brand is a symbol of our mission and dedication to high-quality research. For detailed rules on how to use our trademarks correctly, please see our complete Trademark Guidelines.

Copyrights

Copyright protects original works of authorship, such as the software code we write, our website content, marketing materials, documentation, and presentations. By default, all rights to our copyrighted works are reserved; you may not copy, reproduce, distribute, or create derivative works from our copyrighted material without express written permission. However, we frequently license our software under open source licenses to promote innovation and collaboration. The specific terms of these licenses can be found in the respective repositories or documentation, usually in the LICENSE or LICENSE.md file. Contributors to our open-source projects may be required to sign a Contributor License Agreement (CLA) to clarify the terms under which contributions are made.

When specifically indicated, open-source software grants you a limited, non-exclusive, revocable license to use, modify, and distribute the copyrighted software under the terms of the applicable license. The use of open-source Multifactor software does not automatically grant you any rights to use our Patents or Trademarks, nor does it exempt you from the requirements of our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.
